Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) Services

We are a Magnetic Particle Testing (MT or MPT) service provider, serving Maine and New England. Our MT inspectors are certified to our personnel certification procedure RS-NDT-101-CP which is in accordance with ASNT CP-189, exceeding the reccomendations of SNT-TC-1A. Our inspectors have experience performing MT on many types of structures from dams to cranes, amusment park rides and many others. Please contact us about your Magnetic Particle testing requirements.

Magnetic Particle tests are often used in quality control for investigating the presence of cracks and other surface breaking defects in accordance with industry codes and standards. These inspections are commonly performed on the structural components in buildings, bridges, dams, railroad tank cars, marine terminals, boats and barges, steel storage tanks, construction equipment, and many other types of structures.

We routinly mobilize throughout Maine and New England to provide Magnetic Particle Testing in order to meet the needs of our customers. We provide Magnetic Particle testing anywhere in the USA but can most readily serve Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) is a nondestructive testing method which is used to inspect ferromagnetic materials for cracks. It is an aided visual method where the inspector observes the part and uses colorful magnetic particles to bring out any defects and make them more easily seen. Once the test part is magnetized, colorful iron filings called magnetic particles are blown onto the inspection area. When there is a surface breaking or slightly subsurface crack or defect, it produces magnetic leakage which produces a stronger magnetic field that the area around it, thus attracting the magnetic particles and creating an indication which can easily be observed. This method requires that the test surface be clean and free of loose scale, dirt, and loose paint. Non magnetic surface coatings less than 3 mils dont typicaly hinder the sensitivity of a magnetic particle test, however when coatings exceed 3 mils, it must be either proven that rejectable defects can be found through the coating or the coating must be removed around the inspection area.
